On September 6, 1958 long time Superintendent Roy M. Nelson passed away. Mr. Nelson had
been with the Hughes School since 1937. Bert C. Pouncy Jr., school board president, became
the acting superintendent.
In January 1959 Mr. Roy Stobaugh was elected Superintendent by the school board. Mr
Stobaugh started his employment with the Hughes School on July 1, 1959. He was previously
employed as a teacher for the Wilson, Arkansas School for twelve years and as the Turrell,
Arkansas School Superintendent for last four years.
The 1958-59 school year also saw the return of Miss Clara Moses after a seven year absence.
Miss Moses a graduate of George Peabody College has been working with the Peabody
Demonstration School in Germany and Italy.
1959 also saw the one of the best track teams in the history of the Hughes Blue Devils.
The team won trophies at the district and state meets with Calvin Stackhouse setting a long
standing record in the 100 dash of 9.9 seconds. Other members of the team were: Larry
Chittom, David Clark, Ping Fong, Larry Wilson, Jerry Christian, Wilson Pittman, and Bobby
Downs.
