Mr. Worrell was born at Ackerman, Choctaw County, Mississippi, Son of Radford F. and Lula (Evans)
Worrell. He received the bachelors degree with a major in general science in 1931 from Mississippi
State College, Starkville. While attending Mississippi State, Mr. Worrell was active in the educational
organization Los Hidalgos, served on the Freshman Council and Junior Forum, was a member of the
Crusaders, the “Y” Cabinet, the Choctaw County Club, the Berean Class, and he served as pianist for
the Glee Club. He also did post graduate work at the University of Cincinnati, the University of
Alabama, Harvard University, and Memphis State University, and he augmented his interest in music
by doing advanced studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory. In 1965, he received the Specialist in
Education Degree from the University of Tennessee. Mr. Worrell served as a lieutenant in the Navy
during WWII, seeing service on the island of Guam, as well as other parts of the Pacific. He and Mrs.
Worrell came to HHS in 1951, after which he gave much to the youth of Hughes, both in and out of the
classroom. He managed the swimming pool during summer months, and many Hughes children
learned to swim and dive under his tutelage. He and Mrs. Worrell also “adopted” several young
people, going so far as to finance their higher educations. Mr. Worrell retired in 1976 and continued
living in Hughes until his death on November 7, 2003, interment in the Enon Cumberland Presbyterian
Church Cemetery, Ackerman, Choctaw County, Mississippi.
