Hughes, Arkansas School Faculty Memorial
Maudie Mae (Burkett) Moss
November 2, 1890 – July 13, 1981

General Education
Tenure: 1920 – 1921
Mrs. Moss became a part of the Hughes faculty during that time the school board opted to divide
classes by age group. Construction of the Hughes school building was still two years in the future,
and various grades were held at different locations around town. Mrs. Moss’ school was held in a
“shotgun” house on Peckerwood Row. Mrs. Moss was born in White County, Arkansas, to James
Hardin Burkett and Mary Emily (Goodman) Burkett. No record of Mrs. Moss’ “higher” education has
been found, but one could teach school at that time by completing at least the 8th grade. The 1910
Census verifies that she had attended school, and that she could read and write. Miss Burkett
married Thomas G. Moss on December 29, 1910 at Cotton Plant, Arkansas, and they began life as a
farming family in White County. They had moved to Hughes in time to be enumerated in the 1920
Census, the time she served on faculty, but by 1922 they had moved back to White County. Mrs. Moss
died there on July 13, 1981, burial in Quattlebaum Cemetery, Gravel Hill.
