Mr. Schwam was born February 26, 1918 in Cordova, Shelby County, Tennessee, son of John H. and
Jennie Lucinda (Poston) Schwam. He attended Maryville College at Maryville, Tennessee, where he
was active in the Latin Club, French Club, English Club, and the Presbyterian Club. He completed his
studies in languages and graduated in 1939. He appears as a HHS faculty member in the 1942 Blue
Banner yearbook, but WWII apparently interrupted his tenure at Hughes. He entered the Army at Camp
Joseph T. Robinson, Little Rock, on June 6, 1942. Mr. Schwam returned to the Hughes faculty after the
war, and he married fellow faculty member Sara Fay Kittrell on December 27, 1946. Other than his
teaching duties, he also served as scoutmaster while at Hughes. By 1949, the couple had returned to
their hometown of Maryville, Tennessee, where Mr. Schwam took a position as language instructor at
Maryville College. He remained with the college until the late 1960’s. Professor Schwam died February
15, 1990, at Maryville. After his passing, Mrs. Schwam established the J. Howard and Sara Fay Schwam
Scholarship to provide need-based scholarships to deserving undergraduates enrolled in Peabody
College.
