| Hugh L. Smith July 16, 1909 – January 13, 2004 Athletics Tenure: Mid 1940’s to 1950 |
| “Coach” Smith was born in Brinkley, Arkansas, to Robert Ephram Smith and Alberta (White) Smith. He received a football scholarship to Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, graduating in 1939. He also played basketball during his time at ASTC. Coach Smith served on the HHS faculty from the mid- 1940’s to 1950, and was the head coach who lead Hughes to its first District 6-B Football Championship in 1949. He received the Masters of Science degree with a major in administration from the University of Arkansas, and he left Hughes to continue his career as a school administrator. He returned to Brinkley after retirement, and he died January 13, 2004, interment in Oaklawn Cemetery, Brinkley. His gravestone is inscribed, “Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Teacher, Coach, Friend.” |
