In 1924 Principle Nelson resigned to take a civil service job, his successor was Mr. Joe
McCall. Mr. McCall's former students recall him as a big man with only one eye. Mr. McCall
stayed as principle only one year.
This year also marked the beginning of Mrs. S.C. Russwurm's long interest in the Hughes
School. She was a primary teacher and reported the total school enrollment at 105.
