| Glenda Marvelle (Swindle) Harmon April 1, 1927 – December 22, 2009 Elementary Tenure: 1949- 50 |
| Miss Swindle was born in Marmaduke, Greene County, Arkansas, to Lawson Lee Swindle and Lutie Olevia (Johnson) Swindle. She graduated from Carlisle High School in 1944 and entered Arkansas State College at Jonesboro, graduating in 1949 with the Bachelor of Science in Education degree. She then began teaching 3rd grade at Hughes Elementary School. While teaching at Hughes, or possibly while attending ASC, Miss Swindle met Hughes native and fellow A-Stater Billy Jack Harmon (HHS ’44), and they were married in 1950. Mrs. Harmon continued her teaching career for the next thirty-seven years, the last twenty-four as a fourth grade teacher at Sherwood, Arkansas, a community for which her husband served as mayor from 1993 to 2007. She was a longtime member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority, an avid reader, and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Sherwood. In addition, she was the Sherwood Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year in 2005, and she was a past member of the Sherwood Hometown Health Coalition and the Sherwood history Book Committee, which wrote the 2002 book, “The Signs Still Say Sherwood.” Mrs. Harmon died at the Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock, burial in Rest Hills Memorial Park, Pulaski County. |
