Mrs. Beasley was born May 15, 1917 at Scotland, Van Buren County, Arkansas, daughter of Samuel
Arthur Payne and Elizabeth “Bessie” Sims (Dodson) Payne. She married on November 19, 1939 to
Vance E. Beasley, and they eventually settled as a farming family at Heth, St. Francis County. Mrs.
Beasley received her B.A. Degree from the University of Arkansas and her M.S.E. Degree from
Henderson State College, and she started teaching Junior High English at Hughes in the fall of 1956.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Sorority, the Hughes Town and Country
Garden Club (attaining the Circle of Roses designation for long-term membership and service), the
Hughes United Methodist Church, and she was an accomplished violinist. Not only was Mrs. Beasley a
teacher, she was also a Hughes High School parent, being the mother of Bess, JoBelle and Sam, all
graduates of HHS. Mrs. Beasley died on March 11, 2012, aged 94 years.
